Do not investigate a suspected leak
Move away from the affected area and keep others away. Avoid flames and do not operate electrical switches or devices in that area. From a safe place, contact the emergency number for your gas distributor; it is usually shown on the gas bill. Call 000 when there is an immediate danger to life or property.
Energy Safe Victoria provides official gas-emergency guidance. Your distributor and local regulator can give instructions that apply to your location. Do not use this website’s contact form to request an emergency response.
Gas work requires the appropriate professional
Opening gas components, adjusting fittings or modifying an appliance is outside the scope of this guide. Arrange work with a suitably licensed or registered gasfitter and check the credentials required in your state or territory.
Do not assume an online photograph, business name or general repair description proves a qualification. Ask the actual provider what work they are authorised to undertake and use the regulator’s verification service where available.
Follow the appliance instructions
Use equipment only for its intended purpose. Keep the manufacturer’s operating and maintenance information available, and discuss the relevant service schedule with a qualified professional. This guide does not set a universal interval for every appliance.
An oven is not a room heater. Do not tamper with safety controls, blocked-off openings or appliance connections. A symptom disappearing after a restart is not evidence that an underlying issue has been resolved.
